Floor Heating

A way of heating your home that is gaining popularity is floor heating. Radiant floor heating can help keep not only your floors but your entire home.

You can DIY under floor heating relatively easily. All you need to do is to make a basic floor plan of the room you want to use radiant floor heat. The floor heating system is laid out first, then an adhesive is added, and then tiles are placed over it. Hook up the sensor, and your in floor heating is good to go.

When choosing your floor heat, you have a couple of options. You can choose from hydronic radiant floor heat and electric floor heat. Electric floor heating works like a pre-made electric blanket that is installed under the floor. This in floor heat system makes sure that your entire floor system stays warm without any old spots. Hydronic floor heat runs hot water through tubing installed in the flooring. These radiant floor heating systems are a little more difficult to install, but with professional help and the correct radiant floor heating rubber piping you will be good to go.

Another thing to consider when looking at floor heating systems is the type of construction you are able to do. “Wet” or hydronic floor heating works best in new constructions when you can pour gypsum-based concrete in as you are initially installing the floor. “Dry” installation is easier to do in already existing homes and for remodeling projects.

There are several reasons to choose floor heating. A traditional system will only heat the air and then blow it around the room. This can lead to drafts and fluctuations in temperature depending on how close you are to the source. Warm air also rises, making it difficult to keep the actual living part of the home warm.

Floor heating continuously heats the floor either from pipes or wires that are run underneath and heat the floor itself. The heat then radiates upwards, since heat rises, gradually heating everything in the room. People who use floor heating compare it to sitting in sunlight. Plus, since it is a more efficient way of heating, you can actually save money on your utility bills.

To find out if floor heating is right for you, consider speaking with a vendor of floor heating. Take in a floor plan of your home and the rooms you would like to heat. The vendor can then sit down with you, explain the different types of floor heating, and what will work best in your home with your budget.
